The Elwood Hughes Trophy

Brass Trumpet or Bugle Band

Elwood A. Hughes (1884-1956) was General Manager of the CNE from 1934 until 1952. His love affair with the CNE started in 1908 as a Sports Reporter and then as the fair's Sports Director.

By the time he was 13 years old he had saved 3 boys from drowing. He was part of Canada's first Olympic team to go to Athens, Greece in 1906. Even though a torn tendon prevented him from racing he remained in Athens as a sports correspondent for the Toronto Star.

Elwood Hughes, affectionately know as "Mr. Ex", was truly dedicated to making the CNE the best fair in the world. He was known for bringing in the best talent to the famous Grandstand shows which were the highlight of the CNE for many years.

In 1944, Elwood Hughes married his sweetheart Peg Willin Humphrey, coordinator for many U.S. fairs including the New York World's Fair. Best man at the wedding was Guy Lombardo and guests included J.W. "Patty" Conklin.
